Laurel
The species epithet, "nobilis," means illustrious, important, and famous. Others believe the common name derives from the Celtic root "laur," meaning green.
Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) is an evergreen tree typical of Mediterranean areas. It grows wild in thickets and groves along the coasts of central and southern Italy, Spain, Greece, and Asia Minor, but is also cultivated in gardens and vegetable patches as a small tree or shrub. Since it can sometimes be found as a tree and other times as a bush, you're probably wondering how tall a bay laurel plant grows: in the wild, bay laurel can reach up to 10 meters in height, but it is often pruned as an ornamental hedge, especially in gardens.
Giving laurel as a gift has a good meaning because it is considered a symbol of power, victory and glory and, being an evergreen plant, it is also a symbol of immortality.
In Greco-Roman antiquity, laurel was sacred to Apollo
The modern meaning of “degree” comes from the word laurĕa, and the “graduate” (in Latin laurĕātus) is precisely the one who wears the laurel crown, like scholars and poets.
The myths and legends surrounding laurel extend beyond the Greco-Roman era to more recent times. Popular tradition suggests placing a few laurel leaves under your pillow to dream of future events.
Oregano
and Mediterranean cuisine
Oregano is undoubtedly the most widely used aromatic herb in Mediterranean cuisine and a key ingredient in traditional dishes for the international tourists who flock to Italy every year.
Oregano is an essential ingredient for the flavor and quality of many dishes, and is distinguished by different types:
- Common Oregano
- Southern oregano
- Oregano marjoram
- Sicilian oregano.
Aromatherapy
Oregano is not just a simple aromatic herb used to add flavor to cooking, but is also used as a natural medicine for various therapies. Oregano contains phenols, vitamins, and minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, and manganese, making it a highly effective remedy and supplement. Sicilian oregano has a unique blend of these beneficial properties: a natural antibiotic, useful for protecting us from respiratory illnesses such as colds and coughs. Oregano contains a natural oil that is the most powerful natural antiseptic known to date among plant-derived essences. This benefit enhances the quality of a product cultivated and grown naturally with cutting-edge equipment and techniques, fully respecting nature.
