Sage

Its resistance to extreme climates, both winter and summer, and its adaptability to any type of soil later favored its spread throughout temperate regions. Today, it is one of the classic herbs grown indoors, both in vegetable gardens and in pots.

The genus name derives from the Latin "salvus" (= to save, safe, good, healthy) an ancient name for this group of plants with supposed medicinal properties.

This plant was already considered by the Greeks and Romans to be the herb of health. Sage had to be collected with a particular ritual, without the intervention of iron objects, wearing a white tunic with bare and well-washed feet.

It blooms from May to July.

Sage is indicated for the treatment of gastric and liver disorders, respiratory tract infections, and as an antihidrotic (anti-perspiration). It is also a natural sedative for relieving nervous tension, anxiety, or insomnia.

Sage is widely used in cosmetics.

Its main use is to be combined with melted butter to season regional and local Italian dishes or to flavor a broth or a roast meat or baked fish.

Laurel

The species epithet, "nobilis," means illustrious, important, and famous. Others believe the common name derives from the Celtic root "laur," meaning green.

Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) is an evergreen tree typical of Mediterranean areas. It grows wild in thickets and groves along the coasts of central and southern Italy, Spain, Greece, and Asia Minor, but is also cultivated in gardens and vegetable patches as a small tree or shrub. Since it can sometimes be found as a tree and other times as a bush, you're probably wondering how tall a bay laurel plant grows: in the wild, bay laurel can reach up to 10 meters in height, but it is often pruned as an ornamental hedge, especially in gardens.

Giving laurel as a gift has a good meaning because it is considered a symbol of power, victory and glory and, being an evergreen plant, it is also a symbol of immortality.

In Greco-Roman antiquity, laurel was sacred to Apollo

The modern meaning of “degree” comes from the word laurĕa, and the “graduate” (in Latin laurĕātus) is precisely the one who wears the laurel crown, like scholars and poets.

The myths and legends surrounding laurel extend beyond the Greco-Roman era to more recent times. Popular tradition suggests placing a few laurel leaves under your pillow to dream of future events.

According to many popular beliefs, laurel also possesses magical properties: its mere presence in the home was once thought to ward off evil spirits and break any spell; linked to this tradition is the custom of hanging laurel branches inside homes. Laurel aids digestion, relieves colic and abdominal bloating, and helps expel intestinal gas. It stimulates the appetite and prepares the gastrointestinal tract to absorb food, facilitating digestion. Laurel essential oil helps thin and eliminate bronchial catarrh, relieving coughs. Laurel stimulates sweating, helping to lower body temperature in cases of fever. It has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Massages with laurel oil can help relieve the symptoms of rheumatism and arthritis and facilitate the healing of various injuries. It also has repellent properties; the lauric acid contained in bay leaves keeps insects away. Bay leaves have many uses in the kitchen: they are used in pasta dishes, sauces and gravies, soups and broths, meat and fish main courses, and even in side dishes, to give them a more assertive touch. This aromatic herb is also used to flavor vinegar and to create infusions and herbal teas to enjoy on cold evenings.

Rosemary helps us in hair growth by preparing an essential oil from this plant.

Making it is very easy because you will just need to mix half a cup of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of rosemary leaves.

Heat it for 2 minutes in the microwave or, if you prefer, in a pan on the stove.

In our region, Sicilian oregano, grown by La Valle degli Aromi, is highly prized. It has an erect stem, woody at the base, and branched, corymbose-like inflorescences. The strength of the product grown by this Sicilian company lies in its ability to foster natural growth processes, without the use of any mechanical means or materials that might influence its development.

Sicilian Oregano

Sicilian oregano possesses aromatherapy properties that are effective against staphylococcus, making it widely used, especially for the treatment of respiratory conditions that can affect the bronchi, lungs, and throat. Generally, oregano is used to treat and prevent muscle pain, toothache, swelling, headaches, allergies, fatigue, insect bites, intestinal parasites, and earaches. However, it should be noted that all of these properties have not yet been proven by official medicine. Oregano also possesses other therapeutic properties, the most significant of which are its analgesic, digestive aid, cough suppressant, and easing intestinal pain.
